“Boy Interrupted” Documentary Film - An Official Selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival

A screening of the documentary and panel discussion to raise public awareness of bipolar disorder and to benefit the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund.

The film tells the heartbreaking story of Evan Perry, a 15-year-old boy who took his own life after a lifelong struggle with bipolar disorder. Screening: Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 7pm – Michigan Theater - 603 E. Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI – Click to see event flyer go to: http://www.prechterfund.org/boyinterrupted/

The film recounts Evan’s life and death in the words of his parents, filmmakers Hart and Dana Perry, and others who knew him. His suicide sent his parents looking for answers from experts, friends and family members, as well as from the reams of video they’d taken of Evan through the years. Illustrating how one family deals with loss and grief, this moving film confronts the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide among children.

What Will Happen To My Child/Loved One With a Mental Illness When I’m Gone?

This question has been taken up by a group of concerned and dedicated parents who have been researching various program models across the country. Carol Obloy, Executive Director of the National PLAN Alliance will speak about the value of planning for the future care of your loved one and about the work PLAN (Planned Lifetime Assistance Network) does to meet the needs of families. This presentation should be very informative and interactive. After this presentation, our membership will be asked what they think of the model explained and if this is something they would see as valuable to them. The hope of the Planning for the Future Project group is to determine if such a planning resource should be brought to Michigan. Look for more information on this General Meeting as we get closer to January 24, 2012.

NOTE: Free parking is available in the lot directly across from the Medical Building and the entrance is directly across from the parking lot. Take the elevator to the 8th floor.
